In the first chapter of the book 10 letters _____ by Eli Saslow it talks about the process of how Obama reads 10 letters every day inside a purple folder labeled January 8, 2010. It also says how he has been stressed and just made an announcement earlier that day. “Another eighty-five thousand people had lost their jobs during the last month, he said” (Pg.13). He is expressing how many people lost their job in the last month. “There were other reminders: the new gray hair spreading across the sides of Obama’s head, the heavy creases running across his cheeks, and the dark circles deepening below his eyes” (pg. 13) Here was that they were also saying how besides trying to deal with the U.S. he is also facing aging but for being 60 years old he looked remarkably fit. And once and while he would have an occasional cigarette to calm his nerves. “He had flown 152 times on Air Force One in the last year, visiting 30 states and 21 countries. He had given 160 news interviews, delivered 412 speeches, and spoken at 5 funerals.” (pg. 14) Saslow is talking here about how busy he has been lately with traveling and speeches. In this chapter there was a letter written by a twenty-seven year old, named Jennifer Cline. I her letter she talks about how she was so bored that she decided to write a letter. “Wheel of Fortune had ended. Jeopardy! had ended. Her husband was out working the midnight shift, and her two sons had gone to bed. She sat in the living room of their small duplex in Monroe, Michigan, flipping aimlessly through the channels" (pg.16). She liked Obama because she said “He’s more like us than any other politician,” (pg.16) but when she was watching the program on television it gave her some thoughts. Jay and Jen who are both below the poverty line.They are filling in. For bankruptcy and they also owe lost of money. Right now they are living on food stamps to survive He was also talking about how over the years the numbers have multiplied by how many threats how receive each year. After Obama has read these letters he expresses how he wants to try to communicate with all of the U.S citizens across the nation.

Chapter 2 Summary
In Chapter two of 10 Letters: The Stories Americans Tell Their Presidents by Eli Saslow he introduces a new character names Stephan Johnson. He is sixteen year old and he loves President Obama so much that his new nickname is mr. President. "Stefan Johnson’s link to the president began with a simple nickname: Obama. That’s what Stefan’s teachers and classmates started calling him early in 2008” (pg.81). He talks about how Stephan wants to run for student council but doubting himself because there has never been a black Roman Catholic become in student council. “No black Catholic had ever been elected student body president in Roman’s 120-year history" (pg. 84). Later in the chapter we find out that Stephan's dad tries to write to him but Stephan doesn't want to talk back. “His father communicated from prison only through infrequent letters about the Philadelphia Eagles and the 76ers"(pg.89). Then early in 2010 Stephan decides to write a letter but not to his father but to his role model, Obama. He states on how he was going to run to be the first black student body president of his school. Stephan later gets a letter back from Obama saying how he was proud of him and to keep the good work up. “A few months later, he received a short, handwritten reply from Obama himself—“Stefan, we are very proud of you, so keep it up” (pg. 68). Then graduation time comes and his mother still owes an overabundance of bills and dues. To celebrate his mother and his whole family takes him out to dinner and celebrate this wonderful celebration. “To celebrate on graduation weekend, Monica reserved a special room at Phillips Seafood and invited thirty-five members of the extended family to dinner.” Overall Stephan was very strong and brave to stand up and be unique about being the first black student body president.
